Parallel Divide

Parallel Divide was my final independent project for my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from Illinois State University. The concept for this project is to propose to the viewer the idea that nature and technology are not foes but are something more along the lines of koi fish that swim around in unison and harmony. I wanted to try to introduce the idea of both entities being seen as branches of the natural world.

For this project, I created three augmented reality systems that demonstrate technology and nature intertwining. All three systems have text from a poem that I wrote that is broken into 3 parts. The three videos also have abstract fractal shapes symbolizing the harsh and seemingly straight cut image of technology. I used these shapes because fractal art is created by a geometrical mathematic system. Each system was filmed in three diverse natural locations. I created a booklet, posters, and video to expand the visual world of the project. The booklet sections are in order of the poem, each section has a QR code that can be scanned to demonstrate the augmented reality systems. The full-length video is a compilation of each of the augmented reality videos that take the viewer on an abstract ride through the Parallel Divide.

This project really allowed me to reach into my artistic side and create a project with a concept I am very interested in as well as be able to use different avenues of creation to showcase the project.
